While the United States is the wealthiest country on earth, it is deplorable to see that USDA statistics show a 14.6% increase in “food insecurity” nationwide from 2008-2010. The increase is nearly 20% in some Southern states. (Source: USDA. Coleman-Jensen, A., Nord, M., Andrews, M., & Carlson, S. Household Food Security in the United States in 2010 )
In our community and throughout much of the nation, food bank officials will tell you that they are seeing more middle class families turning to charitable outlets to find basic sustenance.
We believe that not only is it our civic duty to address this issue, but also that we could not in good conscience call it The Ultimate Food App if we could not find a way to use this technology to help you feed the hungry in your community. We propose to create a capability within The Ultimate Food App that allows users and restaurant owners alike connect to food banks nearby. Whether you run a licensed commercial kitchen or have extra groceries at home, you will be able to inform one or more food banks that you have surplus food and make arrangements to get the food to where it’s needed most.
We will not charge any user, restaurant, or food bank to use this system.
At a funding level of $105,000, we plan to develop this vital service.
